The Pit - General Discussion
Which oil stop leak should I use on my BMW X5? Its developed a pretty good leak from the rear main seal and oil pan. It just started about 3 weeks ago and seems to be getting worse. I’ve heard bad things about the Bars stop leak and don’t want to damage my engine. Shop wants 3 grand to replace both seals…
The Lucas and Bars products both make your oil thicker so you may not want to use either one as they will increase your oil compression which is not good for the high performance engine in your 325. I suggest using a product called Titan Oil Stop Leak. I’ve used it in a few of my vehicles over the years. The Titan oil stop leak is probably the best of all the oil stop leaks as it is guaranteed not to thicken your oil or increase the compression ratio of your engine. Plus you only have to apply one application which should last around 3 to years. When the leak starts to come back you can always add another bottle later. The other products must be reapplied every time you do an oil change and have side effects the Titan products does not have any negative effects on the engine.
I agree the best is the Titan oil stop leak. I used it in my wifes Subaru which had a real bad leak between the cylinder head and engine block and the leak stopped in about 3 days. That was over 3 years ago and no sign of oil loss since.
Forgot to mention make sure you get the Titan 2 bottle pack not the single bottle. All BMW’s have larger oil capacities and you’ll need both of the 8oz. bottles in the engine oil to get a full seal… Also, try to add them with a new oil change so they can stay in the system longer… you should see some good results in about 150 to 200 miles of normal driving. Let me know what happens…
Use the titan product if you can find. It’s not in the auto parts store but if you search for it and you’ll find it on the web. They’ll send it to you in about 2 days and its worth the wait. No bad effect, no worries. I used it a few times once on my BMW 325 which was burning oil- worked! and once on my x5 leaking from various locations- worked!
call me old fashioned but I say just fix it right…
